Beautiful July Sunday in Colorado merits a trip to Tiny Town in Morrison Colorado. The trip is no more that a half hour trip from the heart of Denver. (Depending on traffic of course.)
Pictured is the #10 Cinder Belle "An honest-to-goodness coal-fired, live steam engine of the 2-6-0 design. In the United States, this type of locomotive was widely built from the early 1860s to the 1920s and commonly referred to as a Mogul." Ref Tiny Town Railroad web site
"George Turner, owner of Denver business Turner Moving & Storage and a friend of Buffalo Bill Cody, began building a miniature town for his daughter in 1915. Called Turnerville, he opened the site to the public in 1921.
Turnerville quickly became one of the state's most popular attractions, but it was plagued by damage from adjacent Turkey Creek flooding and a fire burned down the Indian pueblo in 1935. The train was added in 1939 and the name became Tiny Town" Ref Wikipedia.
To add a little perspective to the Houses in Tiny Town look close. Alice in Wonder Land was it "Drink Me" or "Eat Me" or Lilliputians????
The "American Gothic" house originally built in 1881. Was the backdrop used for Grant Wood's world famous portrait of two stern figures. The American Gothic House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Carl E. Smith Donated the house to the state of Iowa as a historic site in 1991. The State Historical Society of Iowa owns and manages the site. Located in Eldon, Iowa.
And yes the trip really was for the little ones... not just a trip to take photos for the big kids. ;)
And you can never forget the Adams Family....
More to come as I process through the Photos that were taken during the day at Tiny Town Morrison Colorado.
